Late Night With The Devil
By Kit Macdonald
Rosemary's Baby meets Network, anyone? This wickedly funny and genuinely scary modern horror from the Australian brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes delivers shocks and laughs in equal quantities as it brilliantly sends up 1970s network talk shows. The movie purports to be based on long-lost footage from an ill-fated 1977 episode of an American talk show, the host of which decided to try to boost his flagging ratings by airing a special fright-night episode featuring a séance, a psychic, a cynic, a parapsychologist and the star of the show, a demonically possessed 13-year-old girl.
Aside from its bracingly delivered demonic possession elements, Late Night With The Devil deliciously satirises the indignity and desperation of the small screen's constant grasp for ratings. David Dastmalchian is fantastic as the supremely needy and insincere host, and Ingrid Torelli chillingly excellent as the possessed girl.
