LOLSNAKE
By Kit Macdonald
The unique perspective of Danielle Lumma Rahal, the Iraqi-American DJ also known as Lolsnake, was forged from a fascinating and challenging backstory.
She moved to Oakland as a child, her family fleeing war-torn Iraq, and faced discrimination and alienation in her adopted country. “Being Muslim and Iraqi in the early 2000s in the United States was not a walk in the park”, as she told an interviewer. Having settled in Berlin she started her party Weeeirdos, turned it into a label too, secured residencies at OHM and HOR, She describes playing Berghain for the first time as a life-changing experience, and her energetic DJing, which encompasses trippy techno, trance, heavy techno and much more, are a energising and uplifting.
