Matemifasol
By Charlotte Stace
CosmoCaixa welcomes its latest exhibition, Matemifasol. Exploring both the realms of music and mathematics, it looks to expose the similarities between these seemingly opposing disciplines.
The ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras was the first to establish a link between music and mathematics. Since then, many others in the field have tried to further fine-tune the relationship between these two very different subjects. Even the German astronomer and mathematician Kepler spent much of his career trying to describe the music generated by the movement of the stars. While his theory was incorrect, he was right to suggest that music was in fact present everywhere.
Both disciplines study abstract objects, have complex structures, rules of manipulation, explicit notation and are precise in their results. Working in these fields demands practice, creativity and analytical thinking. This exhibition offers a historical journey through both disciplines and helps shine a light on the nature of the world we live in.
