New talents in asian video art
By Charlotte Stace

The Fundació Joan Miró presents New Talents in Asian Video Art, showcasing works by Musquiqui Chihying (Taipei, 1985) and Timoteus Anggawan Kusno (Yogyakarta, 1989). Both artists received the Han Nefkens Foundation - Loop Barcelona video art production grant, awarded in collaboration with the Fundació Joan Miró. Chihying was selected in 2019, while Kusno received the grant in 2021.
Chihying’s film The Lighting (2021) explores the relationship between visual culture and photographic techniques for capturing darker skin tones. Using Kodak’s Ektachrome film, he fuses technology with kung fu cinema, echoing the B-movie aesthetic of the 1970s.
Meanwhile, Kusno presents Reversal and Terra Incognita, the first two parts of his Phantoms trilogy. Kusno’s work centers on jathilan, a traditional Javanese dance where spirit guides, music and movement invoke supernatural forces, allowing spirits to possess the bodies of the dancers. If You're interested in Asian film and art, then this is one exhibition not to miss.
