Agnès varda
By Charlotte Stace
Born in Belgium, Agnès Varda was a photographer, artist and filmmaker, and a pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague film movement. The CCCB’s new exhibition pays homage to her life and work.
Varda was one of the few female directors of her generation. She broke with norms and clichés, aiming always to renew her approach to filmmaking. She made over 40 films, including feature films and shorts, fiction and documentary, and embraced both analogue and digital cinema.
The CCCB celebrates the talent and career of a bold, original artist who experimented and played with her craft. Before becoming a filmmaker, Varda was a photographer and portraitist, and, later in life, she created art installations for museums. For the first time in Barcelona, this new exhibition brings together four of her installations, along with a selection of her essential short films.
