Coco fusco

MACBA presents Coco Fusco: I Learned to Swim on Dry Land, a new exhibition delving into post-revolutionary Cuba.
The exhibition weaves together the lives and works of dissident poets, artists and musicians who have faced political repression. The Cuban-American artist and writer, Coco Fusco, looks at figures such as Virgilio Piñera, María Elena Cruz Varela, Heberto Padilla, Néstor Díaz de Villegas, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, and Maykel Osorbo who are central to this narrative. The result? A multifaceted exploration of revolution, identity and homeland.
Fusco's work critically examines the intersections between artistic expression and authority, incorporating documentation, projects and artifacts. Notable works include her publications English is Broken Here (1995) and Dangerous Moves: Performance and Politics in Cuba (2015), as well as the acclaimed exhibition Only Skin Deep: Changing Visions of the American Self (2001–03).
