Colita. Antifémina
By Charlotte Stace

Colita. Antifémina revisits a landmark collaboration between photographer Isabel Steva Hernández - known as Colita - and writer Maria Aurèlia Capmany, who in 1977 created Antifémina, considered the first openly feminist photobook of Spain’s Transition era. Bold, direct and political, the project challenged the sexist conventions and social hypocrisies of post-Franco Spain, giving visual form to a new feminist consciousness.
Initially withdrawn from circulation by its publisher, Antifémina quickly became a cult work of protest. Decades later, Colita and Francesc Polop - director of her archive and curator of this exhibition - restored and reissued the book in 2021 with Terranova and the Barcelona City Council, ensuring its radical voice reached new generations.
The exhibition reclaims both the book and its authors as pioneers who used art and words to confront oppression. Through photographs and archival material, it celebrates Colita’s sharp, humane lens and her lifelong commitment to truth, irony and women’s dignity.
