David Grubbs + Emil Saiz
By Kit Macdonald

David Grubbs has spent the vast majority of his 57 years making experimental music. A composer, guitarist, pianist and vocalist, not to mention author and distinguished music academic, Grubbs made his first record in 1982 with a short-lived group called The Happy Cadavers, and went on to play in Squirrel Bait, Bastro and Gastr del Sol, Codeine, The Red Krayola, Bitch Magnet and The Wingdale Community Singers.
Since the breakup of Gastr del Sol in 1997, Grubbs has released numerous solo and collaborative records, mostly on the Drag City label. His live shows are a mesmerising combination of improvisation and precision, and this one will take as its jumping-off point work from his new LP, Whistle From Above. Emil Saiz's support set, meanwhile, should set a suitably immersive and textured mood – check out his Cycles of Disappearance album for multiple reasons to get down early.
