La diada 2024
By Charlotte Stace
To get the full Catalan experience, you can’t miss La Diada. Known as The National Day of Catalonia, it’s celebrated every September 11th as a day-long festival that pays homage to the fall of Barcelona during the War of Spanish Succession on the same day in 1714.
Following this defeat, Catalonia lost its independence. Ever since, the date has been on the national calendar as a day that is significant for Catalans across the nation. Of course, it’s quite ironic, seeing that it’s a day of celebration marking a day of loss - but that’s Catalunya for you!
On this day the city comes alive with street parties, concerts from local bands, open days at museums, poster displays, film screenings, street walking tours, and so much more. The demonstration this year will take place in the morning and will involve walking from Estació de França towards the Arc de Triomf.
