La Diada, Catalunya’s National Day, is held annually on September 11th to mark the fall of Barcelona in 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession. That defeat led to the suppression of the region’s historic institutions and freedoms, making the date a symbol of loss, resilience, and the struggle to preserve Catalan identity. Over the years, it’s transformed from a commemoration of military defeat into an expression of solidarity.

The day carries both solemn and celebration. Official ceremonies include wreath-laying at monuments such as the Fossar de les Moreres. Yet, alongside these acts of homage, the city comes alive with street parties, concerts from local bands, open days at museums, film screenings, street walking tours, and more. The demonstration this year will involve walking from Pla de Palau towards La Rambla.

Get the full Catalan experience, and immerse yourself in the history and joy of this special day.
