Machine Gun or Typewriter?
By Kit Macdonald

Two chances here to catch an experimental hybrid of fiction, documentary, and essay cinema that blurs the line between personal confession and political resistance. The movie unfolds as a shadowy monologue from a narrator who may or may not be an underground revolutionary and is broadcasting his final words to an unseen audience. Wilkerson, who has long been notes for his fiercely radical filmmaking, uses the project to reflect on the legacy of leftist militancy, media manipulation and the exhaustion of modern dissent.
Shot in deliciously stark black and white, its 71 minutes pulse with paranoia, urgency and the central tension between violence and communication – the choice between armed struggle (“machine gun”) and radical storytelling (“typewriter”).
