Mad Professor
By Kit Macdonald

Something truly unmissable, casually tucked away on a Monday night here as one of the most influential and respected figures in dub worldwide comes to town to play a two-hour live dub set featuring MC King Karr. The British-Guyanese legend, real name Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, who turned 70 last year, began his extraordinary career in the 1970s, designing his own mixing consoles and effects units, and later founding Ariwa Studios, a pivotal place in the history of UK dub.
He became something of a hit-maker in the 80s, winning a host of awards and building a career that would lead him to remix the likes of Massive Attack, The Orb, Sade and Jamiroquai in the 90s. At this show, which will feel like a classic sound system ritual, expect extended passages that stretch and mutate, delays blooming into dense atmospheres before snapping back into tight, propulsive grooves – an utterly immersive, physical and communal celebration of dub-reggae culture.
