Mecal 2026
By Charlotte Stace

MECAL’s legendary open-air short film nights are back every week in Poblenou. Now in its 28th edition, the Barcelona's International Short Film and Animation Festival brings together hundreds of short works from around the world, spanning fiction, animation, documentary, experimental cinema and everything in between.
The programme is built around its official competitions, including international, animation, documentary, alongside themed sessions dedicated to areas such as comedy, horror, music, LGBTIQ+ stories, children’s cinema, local talent and new audiovisual languages. In past editions, Mecal has screened more than 300 films across dozens of sections, making it one of Europe’s key short-film showcases.
Beyond the screenings, the festival is a meeting point for film lovers and emerging creators, with masterclasses, workshops, filmmaker talks and industry activities. To accompany your film night, a selection of drinks and food will be available at the venue. Doors open at 8pm and the films will begin at sunset - around 9.15pm.
