Pink Narcissus
By Charlotte Stace

First released in 1971, this dreamlike homoerotic fantasy was (for opaque legal reasons) originally released without a credit for its creator, James Bidgood, and his involvement was only revealed two decades later. Now restored and reissued, it stands as one of the most distinctive underground films of the 1970s, a visually extravagant reverie created over several years by Bidgood and shot almost entirely in his small New York apartment.
The film transforms limited space into a succession of lush dreamscapes, following a young male hustler as he escapes into elaborate erotic fantasies, imagining himself as a matador, slave, harem boy and mythical figure. Rich colours, ornate sets and soft-focus imagery create a world suspended between reality and imagination.
