Planet of Zeus
By Kit Macdonald

Athens' Planet of Zeus (no name-related cultural appropriation here) are this year celebrating a quarter of a century of doing their powerful stoner rock/metal/classic hard rock fusion thing, and doing it so well that the frequent comparisons they draw to Black Sabbath don't come across as remotely overblown. The quartet started out playing house parties and dive venues in the Greek capital in 2000 and have ascended to the status of a stadium act in their home country, and enchanted fans around the world with their energetic live performances and riff-heavy sound.
In Autumn last year the band released their sixth LP, Afterlife, which builds on a musical evolution that has taken in heavy riffage and refined songwriting (2014's Macho Libre), highly successful experiments with Southern rock (2014's Vigilante), and aggressive, politically charged songwriting (2019's Faith in Physics).
