Rock Bottom
By Kit Macdonald
The independent cinema treasure that is Zumzeig in Sants has a fine record of being the first theatre in the city to screen the work of Catalan directors, so it's no surprise they're in on the ground floor for María Trénor's keenly awaited animated film inspired by the life and work of the former Soft Machine member and English musical icon in his own right, Robert Wyatt. One of the most ambitious and expansive animation projects in Spanish film history, Rock Bottom follows the tormented love story of a young artist couple immersed in the creative whirlwind of the post-hippie culture of the early 70s.
A dreamlike journey about the transformative power of art and music, set to Wyatt’s exquisite music. As Trénor told Variety during the film's festival run in the summer: "I wrote the script for Rock Bottom more than 10 years ago, just after meeting Robert Wyatt and getting the OK to make a musical film based on his album (Wyatt's LP of the same name from 1974). From then until now, many adventures and ups and downs have happened until I met Alba Sotorra, a Catalan producer committed to films made by women."
