Sam Prekop
By Kit Macdonald

Sam Prekop is best known as the singer and principal songwriter of The Sea and Cake, one of the most distinctive and well-loved groups to emerge from Chicago’s incredibly fertile post-rock and indie scenes in the 1990s. His understated voice, intricate guitar work and gift for airy, sophisticated melodies defined the band’s sound, which was an exquisite blend of elements of jazz, krautrock, pop and minimalist composition, beautifully realised on acclaimed albums such as The Biz and Oui.
Prekop’s solo artistic interests have always extended beyond conventional songwriting, and his solo work explores more abstract territory that takes in intimate acoustic compositions and modular synthesiser experiments. Albums including Old Punch Card and The Republic reveal a fascination with texture, repetition and subtle sonic shifts. Alongside music, Prekop is also an accomplished visual artist, creating drawings and designs that reflect the same meticulous, elegant sensibility found throughout his recordings. Both sides of his creative life are likely to be in evidence at this show at Casa Montjuic. Doors are at 8.30pm, and Prekop is on at 9pm.
