Almost too on-the-nose given the horrific recent developments in Sudan, this documentary, which was released last year, provides a vivid and deeply personal portrayal of the 2019 uprising in Khartoum and the swerve towards the unimaginably brutal conflict that has followed. It tells the story through the eyes of a group of young activists – Shajane, Maha, Muzamil and Khatab – who combine their political activities and activism with poetry, rap and street art, using all of the above to demand freedom after decades of dictatorship.

Of course, the jubilation at the fall of the dictator, Omar Al Bashir, is short-lived, and the situation darkens swiftly, with hopes of a real revolution and transition to democracy colliding violently with a military coup, the growth of paramilitary activity, and eventually civil war. As a document of how Sudan arrived at its desperate current situation, this film is hard to beat.
