The birds
By Charlotte Stace
La Filmoteca shows Alfred Hitchcock’s legendary natural horror-thriller film, The Birds (1963) this September. Starring Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren and Suzanne Pleshette, it was loosely based on the short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier.
The film’s plot revolves around a very wealthy San Francisco socialite, who follows a potential boyfriend to a small town based in Northern California. Yet, events take a turn for the worst, when birds around the town start attacking humans.
Sadly, the film was not initially received well, with mixed reviews from film critics upon its release. That being said, it's earned something of a cult status over the years and has since been widely considered to be one of the greatest horror films of all time. In 2016, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in its National Film Registry.
