The Cameraman
By Kit Macdonald
The legendary American actor, filmmaker and comedian Buster Keaton both starred in and was the creative force behind The Cameraman, which was directed by Edward Sedgwick, who would figure heavily in Keaton's future projects. Both baseball buffs, the two men hit it off immediately and worked together many times in the following years and decades.
The Cameraman's beautifully simple plot follows an awkward photographer who decides to become a newsreel cameraman to win the heart of Sally, a secretary at a news agency. Filled with timeless scenes and moments you'll recognise even if you've never the seen the film before, it mixes physical comedy, romance and pathos with unmatched skill. The Cameraman was Keaton's first film for MGM, a deal that eventually led to a curtailing of his creative freedom and a certain diminishment in the quality of his films, but none of that is in evidence here. A genius at his creative peak.
