This is the sort of midweek Filmoteca treat to make the cineaste in your life drool uncontrollably. Opportunities to see any of Krzysztof Kieślowski's films on the big screen should be grabbed at all costs, especially when it comes to his perfect Three Colours trilogy, which he completed only shortly before his death in 1996 at the tragically young age of 54.

The trilogy, the colours of which are those of the French tricolour, explores the ideals of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, and fraternity. Three Colours: Blue was released in 1993 and was the first of the three. It stars Juliette Binoche as Julie, a woman who survives a car accident that kills her husband, a famous composer, and their young daughter. In the aftermath, Julie retreats from her former life, seeking to free herself from all emotional and material attachments – a pursuit of “liberty” in its most raw, painful form.
