Panot
By Annebeth Vis
Citizens of Barcelona have walked over them for more than a century: panots, the city’s characteristic pavement tiles.
The origin of what is perhaps the city’s most emblematic tile dates to 1900, when Modernista architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch created a design for the foyer floor of Casa Amatller: a flower with four petals. There are four other Modernista tiles lining the sidewalks of Barcelona, including the hexagonal panot found on Passeig de Gràcia designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1904.
These symbols of the Ciutat Comtal are at the center of recently opened shop Panot. Here you’ll find a wide range of products based on the iconic street tiles, from mugs and T-shirts to pillows, pocket mirrors and jewelry or stationary. A great gift for anyone living in the city, and a perfect souvenir for someone about to leave it.
