Lettuce 2025
By Charlotte Stace

Funk collective Lettuce was formed in 1992 by six musicians who met as teenagers at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. The band’s lineup includes Adam Deitch (drums), Erick “Jesus” Coomes (bass), Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff (guitar), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet), and Nigel Hall (vocals/keyboards). Together they fuse elements of funk, jazz, hip-hop, rock, psychedelia and soul, to create a fun, psychedelic-tinged 70s sound.
Their journey began with impromptu jam sessions and performances in Boston clubs, where they would often ask, “Let us play?” - a phrase that inspired their name. Their debut album, Outta Here (2002), showcased their raw talent. Subsequent releases, including Rage! (2008), Fly! (2012), and Elevate (2019) have solidified their reputation as key figures in the modern funk scene.
Their latest album, Unify (2022), is another critically-acclaimed record, and a testament to the band’s creativity and commitment to funk.
