Nation of Language
By Charlotte Stace

Synth-pop trio Nation of Language comes to Razzmatazz. Founded in Brooklyn in 2016, their music touches on genres like minimal wave, post-punk, goth and new romantic, with influences from icons like OMD, New Order and early Depeche Mode. Frontman Ian Richard Devaney (vocals/guitar), Aidan Noell (synth) and Alex MacKay (bass) create music that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
They’ve released four studio albums so far. Their debut, Introduction, Presence (2020), which came out during the pandemic, was described by Billboard as "an irresistible confection of familiar and new sounds". Their second album, A Way Forward (2021), expanded their emotional range, while Strange Disciple (2023), produced by Nick Millhiser, brought a richer sound. Their most recent record, Dance Called Memory (2025), is their first on Sub Pop and marks a more introspective turn.
