Possession (1981) remains one of cinema’s most unhinged and unforgettable depictions of emotional collapse. Set in a divided Berlin and directed with wild intensity by Andrzej Żuławski, the film follows a disintegrating marriage between Anna and Mark, played by Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill. What begins as domestic drama mutates into body horror, political allegory and supernatural nightmare, powered by Adjani’s astonishing performance, particularly during an infamous sequence in a subway.

Banned or heavily censored in many countries on release, Possession has become a cult phenomenon, influencing generations of horror filmmakers with its raw emotional violence and surreal imagery. Beneath the headlines and the hysteria, though, lies something painfully recognisable: the terror of separation, jealousy and losing control of reality itself. Few films capture love turning poisonous with such operatic, nerve-shredding force.
