The Sabres of Paradise
By Kit Macdonald

The Sabres of Paradise were a short-lived but influential 1990s trio formed in 1992 by Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns. Emerging from the post-acid house landscape, their early work fused dub, ambient techno and downtempo into something murky, spacious and resistant to rave orthodoxy. Releases like Sabresonic (1993) and Haunted Dancehall (1995) helped sketch a more introspective path for electronic music, while their Sabresonic club nights became a testing ground for new material and ideas.
The group split in 1995, leaving a small catalogue that has been massively influential on generations of DJs and producers in the decades since. Weatherall tragically and prematurely died in 2020, and Kooner and Burns saw each other for the first time in many years at The Guv'nor's funeral. From that meeting came the reactivation of The Sabres of Paradise in 2024. It has been framed as a tribute, with live shows like these intended to honour his legacy rather than restarting the project as a recording concern.
