The Warriors
By Charlotte Stace

In 1979 Walter Hill attracted just the right balance of praise and outrage for The Warriors, which with its stylised portrayal of gang culture and urban survival in a dystopian version of New York City was hailed for its vivid, dreamlike atmosphere while at the same time being blamed for sparking real-life violence.
The film follows the titular gang as they journey from the Bronx back to their home turf in Coney Island after being falsely accused of murdering a charismatic gang leader, Cyrus. The story unfolds as a night-long odyssey through hostile neighborhoods, with the Warriors battling rival gangs in vividly imagined encounters.
Based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name, The Warriors is a stripped-down slice of genius that blends gritty realism with comic book aesthetics, a perfect synthoid soundtrack and glorious neon-lit cinematography, and this is a rare and unmissable opportunity to see it on Sala Phenomena's huge screen.
